As a taught and research postgraduate at Queen's University Belfast, I felt compelled to respond to your story, "Capacity 'wasted' amid radical cuts" (16 July).

It is not my experience that academics at Queen's are too preoccupied with their own standing to engage with young researchers. I have received support over and above the annual "extra" provided by my funding.
