Plans to produce yet more league tables are deeply disturbing to historians. The proposal would lead to publication of fewer articles and a reduction in the dissemination of research. It would be a return to the age of "elite history", denying future researchers access to a wealth of material. The proposal amounts to a stamp duty on the press - a tax on knowledge. It must be resisted.
