Jonathan Dollimore's defence of theory ("Sex rescues sad character from clutches of caricature", THES , December 20/) was tellingly placed before Kathleen Taylor's essay on imagination and knowledge.

Literary theory has swamped attention to imaginative texts. In 2002, Geoffrey Hill's The Orchards of Syon , Frieda Hughes's Waxworks and Carol Ann Duffy's Feminine Gospels appeared. How much will they figure on syllabuses in 2003?
