Tests for narcissism, empathy and self-esteem when selecting student doctors are of little use if these attributes can be modified during training ("Personality could open door to medical school", THES , January 3). Selection should be based on what is essential for success. As one professional basketball coach said when asked what he looked for when recruiting players: "You can't teach height."
