There is a delicious irony that The Times Higher should have chosen Peter Cole, head of Sheffield University's journalism department and the former deputy editor of The Guardian , to pontificate on the decidedly public school/ Oxbridge composition of the national press in the feature "The decidedly narrow world of Britain's broadsheets", (June 16).

How so? The good professor was educated first at the fee-paying Tonbridge School and then studied at Queen's College, Cambridge University.
