Paul Taylor illustrated his condemnation of the research assessment exercise with evidence from The Times Higher's table of top universities (Opinion, October 13). He points out that the UK (population 60 million) has three institutions in the top 20 and the US (population 300 million) has 11. I reckon that puts us ahead (hooray). Following Taylor's reasoning we must assume that this success is all down to the RAE.
