The report on the decision to allow Suresh Deman to resurrect his claims for racial discrimination against the Association of University Teachers did not carry a quote the AUT provided ("Race-bias claim against AUT dogs Labour official", THES , March 21).
We said: "The Court of Appeal has called for a new hearing at which the appropriate legal tests are to be applied, not because it has found the AUT guilty of discrimination. A new tribunal will, having heard the evidence, determine whether there has been any discrimination - and it goes without saying that the AUT will defend the proceedings vigorously when they're re-listed before the employment tribunal. When the case is re-heard, the AUT will make it abundantly clear that Mr Deman has not been unlawfully treated on racial or any other grounds."
