Reasoned defence

It is unclear whether recent reports of "peer censorship" amount to anything more than "peer criticism", itself an exercise of academic freedom ("Peer pressure curbs language", September 7).

Even academics sometimes say things that on reflection they realise were not what they should have said. Academic freedom allows for reasoned offence, but offence is reasoned only if it hits the right mark.
