I do not support top-up fees being set at the highest level as reported in the profile of Simon Lee, my successor at Leeds Metropolitan University (In the news, THES , September 19). The university's response to the white paper on the future of higher education, which I drafted and support, opposed variable or top-up fees. It accepted that fees might rise, possibly to a maximum of Pounds 2,000, but argued that they should be the same at all universities. This is very close to MP Anne Campbell's proposal, which is gaining support.
