So universities need to teach working-class students social and life skills so that they may earn as much as their middle-class peers ("'Unwashed' must brush up on their social skills", THES , May 17). Who does the Council for Industry and Higher Education have in mind to instruct students in correct speech and table manners? Would such work be taken account of in annual appraisal or perhaps qualify for performance-related pay?
