My reading of Felipe Fern¨¢ndez-Armesto's excellent piece on university mottoes ("Playing to win at Latin tag", 1 March) coincided with the landing on my desk of the annual report of a prominent Midlands university, the motto of which reads "Elite without being elitist".
This got me ruminating on parallel shout-lines for its competitors. We could have "Sexy without being sexist" for Terence Kealey's University of Buckingham; "Aged without being ageist" for Oxbridge; "Human without being humanist" for Heythrop College, University of London; and "Defeated without being defeatist" for Universities UK.
Fear of litigation prevents me from finding a home for "Racy without being racist".
