The road from Athens

It is a fair point that university libraries may be falling behind developments on the internet as researchers increasingly make use of new research behaviours ("Researchers' web use could make libraries redundant", 17 January).

What isn't mentioned is the divide between Athens and non-Athens users of libraries and collections. Without an Athens password, researchers do not have ready access to electronic articles and back copies of journals. Yields from horizontal searches and "power browsing" are denied them.

I'd be interested to know to what extent universities and university libraries are addressing the exclusions created by this new knowledge divide.
