Trick doesn't add up

Hansjorg Geiges states that the magician's 1089 trick (Books, THES , March 14) works for any three-digit number: "No matter which number the audience chooses". This is incorrect as the trick fails for all palindromic three-digit numbers, such as 111 or 595.
