Your front-page article about vice-chancellors' pay (February 25) was the most tawdry piece of tabloid journalism I have seen in The Times Higher since the last time you reported on this subject.

It lacked insight, perspective and intelligent commentary. I do not know how many vice-chancellors deserve all that they receive, but I do know that they - like most of us working in this sector - perform a valuable public service role for which they are paid a fraction of what they might earn in the private sector.
