Discussion of the recent pay increases awarded to themselves by vice-chancellors has failed to provide empirical data allowing comparison with the pay of persons having a comparable skills profile.

The average annual income per employee of seafood outlets appears to be in the region of ?15,000. Managers of such enterprises might expect a seniority premium of about 30 per cent.

This evidence suggests that vice-chancellors leaving the university sector to run whelk stalls are likely to enjoy a thoroughly merited pay cut exceeding 80 per cent.
