We are surprised that a routine announcement by Luton University about vice-chancellor Dai John's retirement next year at the end of his five-year contract on his 60th birthday should arouse such interest ("Embattled Luton v-c to retire at 60", THES , August 23).
The article created the erroneous impression that the timing was influenced by events other than the usual considerations. Governors have fully endorsed the strategy pursued by John. That strategy is progressing satisfactorily as reflected in our teaching quality assessments, league-table positions and sound financial performance in 2001-02.
