HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY. Mark Schaffer, research fellow in the centre for economic performance at London School of Economics has been appointed to the professorship in the centre for economic reform and transformation.

BRUNEL UNIVERSITY

Peter Hammond, former professor of applied computing at Birmingham University and more recently at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, has been appointed professor of logic systems engineering.

UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING

Christine Hallett, head of the applied social science department, has been appointed to a chair in social policy.

UNIVERSITY OF WALES, LAMPETER

John Manning, reader and assistant director of the school of English at Queen's University Belfast, has been appointed to the chair in English.

UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS

Christopher Butler, principal lecturer, has been appointed to the chair of linguistics at the College of Ripon and York St John; Ed Stentiford, senior lecturer, has been made Biwater developmental chair in public health engineering; Ian Netton, reader in Arab and Islamic civilisation and thought at University of Exeter, has been made chair of Arabic studies; Joyce Hill, senior lecturer, has been made a chair of English language/medieval English literature; Mick Gidley, reader in American studies at Exeter University, is now chair of American literature.
