UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL ENGLAND. Honorary doctorates were awarded to the following in March: Richard Noble, founder and chairman of SSC Programmes Ltd; Royden Axe, managing director of Design Research Associates Ltd; Lawrence Baker, expert in producing and teaching others to produce cost-effective buildings, for his work in India; and Maisie Smith, in recognition of her services to charitable and voluntary organisations in the West Midlands.

UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE.

MD: Kenneth Calman, chief medical officer at the Department of Health.

DDSc: Mr Jens Andreasen, associate director of oral surgery and oral medicine, University Hospital, Copenhagen; Margaret Seward, president of the General Dental Council.

UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL.

Her Grace the Duchess of Beaufort was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in March.
