The call by Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union, for universities to donate strike pay for student bursaries should be applauded (¡°Sally Hunt: universities should ¡®donate strike pay to bursaries¡±, News, 1 June). This is something that has been done at London Metropolitan University for many years, and I welcome the call for it to happen across the sector. Hunt¡¯s point on the disparity in UCU membership between younger and older academics is also telling. It is sensible, progressive policies such as this that will help to win members back.
