Nice to know that Scottish universities will acknowlege their organisational debt to the Italian university system - whose Bologna-style student-led model they adopted several hundred years ago in preference to the hierarchical Paris model - by entertaining seven rectors next month. But are they being received by the right people? Their visit will be hosted by the Scottish principals, lineal descendants of the hierarchs of Paris, rather than the student-elected rectors, Scotland's main remnant of its Bolognese origins.
