Lord Butterfield, distinguished medic, member of the House of Lords science and technology committee and former vice chancellor of Nottingham and Cambridge universities, suggested a simple solution this week to the problem of blockages in the academic medicine career ladder - shift the people at the top by appointing more medical vice chancellors.
