A major conference on 'European Manufacturing of the Future: role of research and education for European leadership' is being organised by the Commission in Milan on 1 and 2 December 2003. Attendance is by invitation only.
The Milan conference is being organised by the Italian CNR and the European Commission Research DG Industrial Technologies Directorate and supported by the Italian Presidency of the European Council and EUREKA-Factory. Its purpose is to help catalyse the dialogue between the major stakeholders in Europe on scientific, technological, organisational and industrial issues related to manufacturing. More specifically, this event seeks to verify interest in forming a common European vision on the future of manufacturing technologies.
Four objectives have been set for the event:
Policy: to identify the pattern of change in industrial structures/sectors and related industrial strategies on which integrated European action might/should concentrate to secure the competitiveness and sustainability of European industry by 2010 to 2015;
Research and development: to identify the priority domains and actions for research and innovation that promote the development of active knowledge production systems to foster regional, national and European competitiveness and prosperity;

Education: to identify the most appropriate skills for industry (workers, technicians and managers), consumers and citizens, as well as the requisite changes to existing educational systems, for future competitive knowledge-based industrial systems; and
Action plan: to define a common vision leading to possible action plans for manufacturing technologies ¨C including identification of technology platform(s) ¨C to ensure European leadership by 2010 to 2015.
