One poverty-stricken student, at least, remembers what good food tastes like. Stefan Birch, a hospitality management student at Napier University, has won the Scottish Cookery and Food Association scholarship, beating stiff competition from a shortlist of six, including professionals from Edinburgh's prestigious Balmoral Hotel and country house hotels. His prize is a placement in an American hotel, whose Jean Louis restaurant is said to be one of the finest in the country, but which is probably better known for other reasons - it is the Watergate in Washington.
