James Owen Drife of Leeds University's school of medicine has been reassuring medical students about their post-qualification careers in the latest student edition of the British Medical Journal. "In works of hospital fiction, ever popular on television, one disaster can blow apart a young doctor's future," he says. "In real life this is rare. Most of us have made one or two horrible mistakes early in life and our career survived even if the patient did not."
