The Calvinist work ethic has nothing on the one at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. Professor Eddy Van Avermaet, welcoming delegates to a European adult education conference, praised the wisdom of the organisers in housing it "in the quiet environment of our exact sciences campus, at a safe and respectable distance from the many alternative seductions that downtown Leuven offers its visitors. Here, you will have no choice but to work".
The delegates had also been instructed to bring cheese and wine from their 16 countries of origin, and their contributions turned out to be the ingredients for the conference farewell dinner.
