Industry put a record Pounds 131 million into the 53 "old" universities for research last year, according to figures from the Universities' Statistical Record. Cambridge and science-based Imperial College London each attracted more than Pounds 6 million.

The 36 English universities received Pounds 104 million, with Pounds 32 million going to London University colleges. The six colleges of the University of Wales attracted Pounds 5.4 million, the eight Scottish universities Pounds 20.4 million, and the two Northern Irish universities Pounds 1.6 million.

Cambridge, which moved up from third place, received Pounds 6.2 million, a 5 per cent increase in cash terms on 1992/93 and a 38.7 per cent increase on 1991/92. Imperial College, also second last time, received Pounds 6.1 million, a 2.1 per cent drop but still nearly double the next London college, University College London.

Glasgow jumped to third place, earning Pounds 6 million, a 55 per cent increase on the previous year. Nottingham, which was top last time, dropped to fourth, taking Pounds 5.8 million. Oxford also slipped down, attracting just Pounds 4.6 million, a 5 per cent cash reduction.

New entries in the top ten are Southampton and Manchester, replacing Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh. Southampton made a spectacular leap, from Pounds 2.1 million in 1992/93 to Pounds 4.3 million last year, a 103.4 per cent rise. Manchester made a more modest 23.4 per cent increase, to Pounds 4 million.
