Brussels, 07 May 2002

The twelfth European conference and technology exhibition on biomass for energy, industry and climate protection will be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 17 to 21 June 2002.

The event, organised by WIP (Wirtschaft und Infrastruktur GmbH & Co Planungs KG) and ETA (Energia trasporti agricoltura), will examine the latest global strategies, technologies, projects and best practice for energy and the environment. It will also provide an opportunity for discussion amongst scientists, policy makers and those involved in the use of biomass as an energy source.

Discussions will focus on a range of issues, including research and development in the field of bio-energy conversion technology, biomass resources, the demonstration and implementation of bioenergy in the heat, electricity and transport sectors, strategy and policy issues and biomass in the developing world.

The event will also feature the Biomass excellence award and the Biomass junior award for outstanding initiatives in the area.

Today, three per cent of primary energy consumed in the EU is derived from biomass resources. The exploitation of biomass is one way to fulfil the EU's Kyoto commitment to reduce 1990 greenhouse gas emissions by eight per cent by 2008 to 2012, and an EU White Paper objective to increase the share of renewable energy sources in European energy production to 12 per cent by 2010.
