Dundee University, which is setting up Scotland's first chair in gender relations, also boasts the first woman to hold a chair in a Scottish University. Margaret Fairlie, a pioneer user of radium who was appointed as professor of obstetrics and gynaecology in 1940, was known affectionately by students and colleagues as "the Madam" and "Maggie".
