Patients and their families often give gifts to nurses as a way of evening out the balance of power, according to research from the University of Hertfordshire's School of Health and Human Sciences.
Senior lecturer Ian Peate, who interviewed eight nurses in four settings, said: "The giving of gifts immediately causes a disparity in status between the donor and the recipient. More often than not the giving of gifts requires a duty to reciprocate."
