Alumni to be proud of No. 20 is that well-known son of Romanian Jewish refugees Michael Hecht, now known to the police, and the electorate, as Michael Howard. His compassion towards displaced people and determination that they should be offered the same chances as his parents and others of the same vintage (for example the Portillos of Madrigal, Old Castile) was doubtless acquired at that notorious bastion of liberal values, Peterhouse College, Cambridge.
