Veterinary schools have failed in all but one case to win money earmarked by the Wellcome Trust to develop centres of research excellence in veterinary medicine. The failure illustrates a weakness of "serious national concern", the trust has said. The trust set up a "major initiative" in October 1993, to help vet schools bring together basic scientists and clinicians to work in clinical medicine. But although all six schools applied, only Edinburgh succeeded.
