A statistical analysis identifies relationships but explanation needs more careful consideration.
Your front page report ("Knights top pay league" THES, September 8) fails to realise this when it states "public honours (including CBEs which increase pay by 26 per cent)".
Surely the award of a CBE does not cause an increase.
Perhaps a more rational explanation is that length of service as a vice- chancellor leads to both higher pay and the increased likelihood of a CBE?
Truly statistics is an art as well as a science!
