A brief word of advice for any youngsters whose ambition is to become acting head of a prominent social science institution. You really have to have been to Manchester Grammar School. Both Ivor Crewe, now given tenure at Essex University after a spell as acting vice chancellor, and Les Hannah, the pro-director who will be stepping in at the London School of Economics, are products of the Mancunian forcing house.
