Salford¡¯s move is expected to affect administrative posts in the main.
The university says the eventual number of job losses is likely to be ¡°significantly lower¡± than 218, but it has not ruled out compulsory redundancies. The announcement puts around 9 per cent of the institution¡¯s 2,500 jobs at risk.
The cuts come at a time when Salford is undertaking significant spending on its campus at the MediaCityUK development.
A Salford spokesman said: ¡°As part of our strategy to enhance and improve our teaching and student experience, we are embarking on a programme to deliver more effective administrative and professional services.
¡°This will affect around 200 employees, but a significant number of new roles are being created which will be filled by affected staff. The number of job losses is expected to be significantly lower than the affected figure.
¡°We remain fully committed to working with the unions and staff to avoid compulsory redundancy where possible,¡± the Salford spokesman said.
