(Photograph) - New horizons: Sir Arnold Wolfendale, former astronomer royal, opens the Alston Observatory at the University of Central Lancashire. The site, which has been redeveloped, contains the multiple aperture telescope, one of the largest optical telescopes in the United Kingdom. It also has a planetarium and computing and optics laboratories and darkrooms.
