Optimist of the week is Jon Rogers, a Hull graduate in electronic engineering who has landed the job of assistant to Stephen Hawking, the theoretical physicist. He was surprised to win the job but confidently told his student newspaper: "I don't know anything about theoretical physics but no doubt I'll pick it up."
