New rates for postgraduate bursaries and studentships were announced by the Government this week.

Tim Boswell, further and higher education minister, said the 1995/96 academic year would see a 2.5 per cent increase on the current year's rates, with bursaries for students living in London rising from Pounds 3,295 to Pounds 3,375; for those living elsewhere the award rises from Pounds 2,600 to Pounds 2,665; and others living in the parental home will get Pounds 2,015 instead of the current Pounds 1,965. Studentships will go up in London from Pounds 5,555 to Pounds 5,695; elsewhere from Pounds 4,415 to Pounds 4,525 and for students living at home will rise from Pounds 3,255 to Pounds 3,335.

The Department for Education awards 660 new and continuing postgraduate bursaries to students from England and Wales, and 63 studentships. Mr Boswell said supplementary allowances for postgraduates would be increased broadly in line with the rise in bursary rates.
