The "golden triangle" of London, Oxford and Cambridge has lived up to its title in the latest cash allocations announced this week by the Higher Education Funding Council for England for 1995/96.
The council awarded Pounds 20 million to 119 institutions for generic research, defined as "collaborative research which will lead to a range and diversity of applications - such as will be relevant to a range of customers, but without probability of appropriation or capture by any one customer in particular".
It also gave Pounds 6.8 million non-formula funding for specialised research collections in the humanities. A further Pounds 47,500 humanities collection funding goes to Queen's University, Belfast.
Oxford is the main recipient in both categories, with Cambridge second for generic funding and third for humanities collection money. London institutions make up four of the top ten in each category.
