Nowadays, every county council worth its salt wants a university, not least because it is likely to mean an extra Pounds 50 million or so to the local coffers. But there was a time when university influence was resented by the minions-turned-monarchs. CVCP chairman Ken Edwards tells the tale of the Aberystwyth councillor who sounded off about the university which "like an octopus has been spreading its testicles throughout the town".
