There was an extra touch of chemistry during Scotland's rugby performances at its Five Nations matches in Ireland last weekend. Scotland's team included Craig Joiner, a third-year chemical engineering student at Heriot-Watt University, while Duncan Massey, in the fourth year of the same course, played in the under 21s match. Senior lecturer Ron Hill stressed that an aptitude for rugby is not part of the departmental selection process, and that despite the strength of the department's research team, it had not developed a formula to improve sporting expertise.
