Tempers were short at the end of the European Patent Office appeal hearing about whether or not a genetically engineered mouse could be patented. When officials announced that the appeal would finish without conclusion, having run out of time, a lawyer reportedly said: "We want to register our objections that the appeal has ended in this way." "You can't," came the reply, "the appeal has ended."
