Tom Blundell, chief executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, has won this year's Opportunity 2000 award for "top level commitment" to equal opportunities in the public sector. Among the initiatives promoted by Professor Blundell at the BBSRC are a programme of equal opportunities awareness training, better maternity rights for BBSRC-supported scientists, setting up childcare facilities and "family-friendly" initiatives such as adoption and dependency care leave.
