The social-networking website Twitter can act as an "exceptional" communication tool in academia, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Leicester have established a system for students to communicate during their first term of higher education by "tweeting". They have found it helps students to develop personal support and learning networks. As a result of the study, published by the Association for Learning Technology, the university is planning to expand its use of Twitter as a communication channel.
