Lucia Nagib will take up a new chair in world cinema at Leeds University on January 1.

The position was one of 20 centenary chairs advertised in The Times Higher last year.

The roles, which span Leeds' nine faculties, were created to mark the university's 100th anniversary, which took place in April.

Dr Nagib is presently associate professor at Campinas University, a public institution established in 1966 by the state of Sio Paulo and one of Brazil's leading higher education institutions.

Her previous academic positions include visiting Leverhulme professor at Birkbeck College, University of London, and visiting research associate at Oxford University's Centre for Brazilian Studies.

Dr Nagib is also a film critic for the daily newspaper Folha de S. Paulo .

Dr Nagib's research focuses on cinematic realism, the new waves of the 1960s and contemporary new cinemas.

Last year, Dr Nagib edited The New Brazilian Cinema , the first comprehensive critical survey of the country's film production since the mid-1990s.

She is in the process of completing a book on utopia in Brazilian cinema as well as developing a project on corporeal realism in Japanese and East Asian film.

Dr Nagib will be involved in teaching Leeds' new MA in world cinema, the first programme of its kind in Britain.

The course is located in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, and students can explore "non-Hollywood" cinema from Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Topics covered range from Italian neo-realism to Brazilian cinema novo , as well as broader topics such as the European film industry.
