Labs, lies and lit

November 30, 2017

Reviewing the book From Madman to Crime Fighter: The Scientist in Western Culture, by Roslynn D. Haynes (Books, 23?November), Richard Joyner praises The New Men by C.?P. Snow (1954).

In the current febrile atmosphere of replication panic and retraction of papers after publication, Snow¡¯s earlier novel The?Search (1934) should not be ignored. Here the reader will find a convincing account of the falsification of results in nuclear physics and its subsequent cover-up. The book explores the tension between personal loyalty and a commitment to objectivity, which is to be found in all the sciences.
