Bonded scholarship schemes run by governments and companies are not uncommon (¡°The pains of bondage¡±, Opinion, 16 November). It is not the business of UK universities to renegotiate these schemes but it is our business to ensure that only qualified candidates (in terms of the subject and English language ability) are accepted on to PhD schemes, and that those who are not qualified are not accepted, regardless of the fees payable. Otherwise, we may as well advertise PhDs for sale.
