The news story ¡°Universities build up their youth teams¡± (News, 27 April) explored some of the benefits of involving undergraduates in research projects.
But it overlooked an additional motivation for involving undergraduates in research: with no PhD funding worth mentioning outside the centres for doctoral training facilities, it¡¯s sometimes the only way to get junior researchers to work with. Undergraduate and master¡¯s level projects have formed a core part of several of my recent conference and journal papers.
Doing this is good for students (particularly the ones who got to present or co-present our work internationally), and good for me as well.
