I read with interest your research report concerning the relatively modest level of French academic salaries and its apparent link to ¡°institutional equality¡± between junior and senior staff, democratic decision-making and job security and autonomy (¡°French professors fall short in global salary comparison¡±, News, 30 March). Given the corrosive levels of staff discontent with senior management in many UK universities, might the adoption of ¡°French¡± pay scales provide one of the solutions?
