The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the ARotor lab is looking for a

Doctoral Researcher / Master thesis worker

The position is suitable for person interested in signal processing for condition monitoring of paper and steel machinery. The application is for a master’s thesis or doctoral studies. After successfully completing the master’s thesis, the student can proceed to doctoral studies. The work will be conducted in a collaboration project between an industrial partner and ARotor lab in Mechatronics research group. In practice, the aim of the work is to deploy modern signal processing in condition monitoring, and to study their performance.

Please note that the skills listed in this document will be considered asset, but mastering all of them is not required.

Description of the project

In many industrial processes such as paper, cardboard and steel making, the end product is formed by rolls. Ensuring an accurate geometry and rotating motion is important in the process to enable higher production speeds with a satisfactory product quality. This research aims to develop improved methods for roll service, where in-process data is used in roll service to improve the behavior of the rolls in the process.

The public BETTER project aims to advance signal processing science and its applications in following ways:


	Develop and apply novel signal processing methods for extracting repeating patterns caused by individual rolls, pumps, felts and other rotating components from measured machine direction quality (MD) variation.
	Create useful and convenient metrics for online condition monitoring of single machine elements to quantify their individual significance to the quality of the end product in the process. Using these metrics, the longer term development of the patterns due to wear of the machine elements will be studied.
	Conduct an experiment where the measured quality variation connected to a roll is used to grind a compensative geometry on the roll to eliminate or reduce the quality variation, as rolls and machine elements are known to deform due to mechanical and thermal loads in the production process. Simultaneously, the experiment is used to assess how well the extracted roll patterns correspond to measured geometry errors in the corresponding rolls.
	The research will be conducted in close cooperation with consortium members from the paper, cardboard and steel industries, many of whom can directly exploit the results of the research. The new methods can be applied to improve product quality, increase uptime and to ease maintenance and condition monitoring. Additionally, novel implementations of the developed signal processing methods will become openly available for end users as well as the scientific community.


The general eligibility criteria are:


	Master's or Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, computer science, statistics or other relevant field
	Excellent written and oral skills in English
	Fluency of the Finnish language is considered a benefit
	Applicants must be able to work full-time and as soon as possible when applying to the doctoral programme. What we offer

Salary of a Master?s thesis phase is 2439 €/month (gross) full time max 6 months. After graduation the starting salary of a doctoral researcher is about 2700 € / month (gross), with possible increases based on achievements. The annual workload is currently 1612 hours. The employment contract includes occupational health care, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The first contract (for doctoral studies) will be made for 2 years, followed by a formal midterm evaluation. If the midterm evaluation is successful, an extension to the work contract will be made so that the total time for the doctoral studies is four years.

Our group manufactures a variety of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) in state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facilities for novel therapies of different cancers and rare diseases.

About the role

The Production Assistant is responsible for supporting the manufacture of different types of Investigation Medicinal Products (IMPs) and “Specials” for cell therapies, but especially viral vectors used in clinical trials, by taking care that the documentation, materials, equipment and facility are ready for use.

The tasks of the Production Assistant include reviewing and updating GMP documents like Standard Operation Procedures and forms, validating equipment and completing corresponding reports, confirming service status of equipment, cleaning and monitoring processing rooms, gathering and preparing materials into cleanrooms.

Furthermore, during manufacturing activities inside the cleanrooms the post-holder is guiding the operators through aseptic production processes according to written procedures, ensuring that all steps are carried out correctly, passing materials between differently graded environments, completing necessary process tasks in the cleanroom and filling in the documentation in line with the Pharmaceutical Quality System (PQS).

For continuous improvements of processes, the Production Assistant is an active participant when investigations of deviations / quality exceptions are carried out and when corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) are implemented.

In addition to be able to work independently strong team play with other members of the production team, including senior staff, is required by the Production Assistant to receive the required support and to master all tasks in a timely manner to the required standards. Close interactions with other groups of the wider team, e.g. technical and quality staff, is also needed on a regular basis to ensure milestones are met and products delivered according to schedule.

The Production Assistant must be highly motivated and interested in working in the GMP manufacturing field. Previous GMP experience is desirable, but at least basic GMP knowledge and biological background is crucial. Broad range of training on GMP is provided as required. ?


This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

The Designer Materials and Devices Group at the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering is looking for a highly motivated?Postdoctoral Researcher?to work on Metasurfaces for Future Communications, related to a large international project "Self-Programmable Metasurface Networks for Wireless Communications and IoT".

Scientific context

6G will enable revolutionary technologies like the Internet of Everything, 3D holographic communication, robotics, Industry 4.0, and wireless brain-computer interactions. A key challenge for 6G, which will operate at sub-THz frequencies, is high signal attenuation in the atmosphere and common urban materials like concrete. To overcome this, 6G will require novel solutions such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (metasurfaces). These passive adjustable structures can deflect electromagnetic waves in specific directions, optimizing the wireless environment by enhancing communication without adding costly active components.

Your role and goals

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to advancing the science necessary to enable next-generation communication systems based on metasurfaces and revolutionizing communication networks and IoT. You will work on new physical mechanisms in electromagnetic wave control and design application-oriented metasurface geometries supporting human-machine interaction. You will collaborate with the multidisciplinary project team and possible industrial partners. The research methodology will have both theoretical, simulation, fabrication, and experimental components.

There are possibilities for research collaboration and extended visits to the following project partners: A. Alù (City University of New York), H. Krishnaswamy (Columbia University), M. Rinaldi (Northeastern University), and S. Shakkottai (University of Texas at Austin), Z. Sun (Aalto University), and N. Ravaja (University of Helsinki).

The expected starting date for the position is negotiable but preferably January 1, 2025 and it is intended for full-time work. The selected person will work under supervision of Assistant Professor Viktar Asadchy and Emeritus Professor Sergei Tretyakov. The successful applicant will have a possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers, publish in high-profile journals, supervise students, attend scientific conferences, and go on research visits to the external collaborators.

	A doctoral (PhD) degree in electrical engineering, physics, or similar.
	Strong background in electrodynamics and excellent mathematical skills.
	Experience in metasurface or RIS design.
	Ability to generate own research ideas.
	Proficiency in electromagnetic simulation software, such as CST Studio Suite, COMSOL Multiphysics, or ANSYS HFSS and electronic design software, such as ADS.

We are seeking to appoint an Enterprise Fellow as part of the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies in E-Textiles Engineering. The position is part of a research team working on electronic textiles for wearable and industrial applications. The holder of this post will work on applying electronic technologies developed for integration with textiles including flexible wireless sensing circuits, RFID-based sensing technologies, and wireless power transfer technologies within e-textiles for wearable and IoT applications. This role builds upon world-leading research developed with the research team and will have a strong focus on developing the technologies towards commercial exploitation.

You will work in a large dynamic interdisciplinary team of research fellows and PhD candidates researching different aspects of e-textile systems.

A successful candidate will have:


	A PhD or equivalent experience in electronic engineering with a focus on practical electronics design skills, including PCB design for analog circuits along with experience with low-power microcontrollers such as Arm Cortex-M and MSP430 devices.
	Embedded software development experience (C/C++) as well as scripting experience in Python/Matlab (desirable).
	The ability to meet with clients and stakeholders, discuss and propose specifications/solutions and build relationships.
	An entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm for exploiting research either through spin offs or licencing and communicating technologies in writing and in-person to technical and non-technical audiences.
