The Arab Open University is a relatively young university, dedicated to higher education in the fields of science and knowledge. It has a partnership agreement with the UK-led Open University, which focuses on modern flexible learning and teaching, enabling students to study at the times and from the locations that suit their needs.
In 2002, the university¡¯s headquarters were opened in Kuwait. Since then, branches have been established in Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Sudan, and Palestine. There are intentions to develop more branches in Yemen, Syria and Mauritania.
The Arab Open University provides bachelor and graduate programmes to students across five faculties: business, computer studies, language studies, education, and graphic and multimedia design technology.
Open learning refers to activities that enhance learning opportunities beyond formal education systems, including distance learning, e-learning and blended learning. Blended learning at the Arab Open University teaches through tutorials, office hours, self-study packages and electronic learning resources and systems. To apply, all students must undergo an English language test.
There are two 16-week semesters in the academic year, as well as an optional summer semester for students who are interested. For a bachelor¡¯s degree, the course duration is three years, and for a master¡¯s, two to four years.
